WHAT Hi FI Verdict
“At first we feared for the Twenty5.23s. They don’t look all that different from the well-regarded Twenty versions and cost around a third more.
But once we started listening it’s obvious that the new speakers are notably better across the board. While retaining a similar sonic character, the Twenty5s are clearly ahead when it comes to resolution, dynamics and punch.
If you’re looking for a top class pair of compact floorstanders we can’t think of a better alternative. Highly recommended.”

A musically enthralling performer

nice to use
The ideal partner for our NAC 152 XS preamplifier, the NAP 155 XS features a substantial, custom-designed toroidal transformer with separate transformer windings for each output channel. It delivers 60 watts per channel (into 8 ohms) and will become the musical engine of a modern or traditional hi-fi system, whether the source is a digital stream, CD or vinyl.
The NAP 155 XS is flexible enough to be used in most types of systems, both passive and active but retains an unwavering focus on performance.
The heart of the amplifier circuit is a version of the world class NAP 500 with a substantial and very quiet power supply using a custom-designed and manufactured toroidal transformer. Improvements over its predecessor, the NAP 150, include: a new toroidal transformer for improved regulation; separate windings for each channel and preamp; and an up-rated preamp power supply to improve the performance of the preamp.
The entry-level separate preamplifier, the NAC 152 XS provides all the transparency and musicality you’d expect from Naim Audio, plus a long-term upgrade path to even better performance.
The NAC 152 XS, a replacement for the NAC 122x, is based on its larger brother the NAC 202 and features a hardwired motorised Alps volume control potentiometer delivering better performance and lower noise in use. The six DIN inputs are relay switched, improving performance. Much care in the design has been afforded to making the casework and PCB as low resonance as possible and to isolate the PCB from interference in its environment. The NAC 152 XS features an additional output alongside the Naim Audio standard DINs. This stereo output on two RCA sockets is optimised for connection to an active subwoofer and supports the growing use of 2.1 systems. Its rear panel layout is similar to the NAC 202 and hence is Fraim friendly. The NAC 152 XS can be powered from the preamp power outputs of the NAP 155 XS or NAP 200 or can be upgraded by powering it from either a FlatCap XS or HiCap power supply. One of the DIN inputs can supply power to a Naim Audio StageLine outboard phono stage.
As our premium entry-level player, the CD5 XS doesn’t just sound better than our CD5si: it also gives you more scope for growth. You can make its sound even more expressive by adding our FlatCap XS power supply component. Alternatively, you can use its transformer-coupled digital output to upgrade it with our external DAC. Add an ND5 XSnetwork player and Naim Audio amplification and you’ll have an accessible high-end separates system capable of delivering a seriously convincing sound no matter how you choose to listen.
Stiff, extruded aluminium casework provides excellent resistance to external vibration
High performance drawer and transport mechanism as with our premium CDX2 model, providing low resonance, low-inertia disc operation

9th January 2018, CES, Las Vegas: Chord Electronics has launched the most advanced compact DAC on the planet: Qutest. A highly accomplished standalone device, the new Qutest is based on the latest proprietary Rob Watts’ FPGA technology developed for the class-leading Hugo 2 DAC/headphone amp. Qutest uses an all-new precision-machined aluminium chassis and includes several new features, including fascia controls.
Qutest uses the same award-winning internal DAC architecture and proprietary software coding as the Hugo 2, giving it proven class-leading technical and sonic performance. Qutest also offers Hugo 2’s unique user-selectable frequency-shaping filters and input selection controls, available via two fascia-mounted spheres, introducing useful flexibility. Qutest offers a significant cost saving over Hugo 2 (H2 £1,800), as it eschews the headphone amplifier, rechargeable Li-on batteries and crossfeed functionality integral to the transportable device.
Qutest is the latest evolution of Chord Electronics’ most affordable standalone DAC, the multi-award-winning 2Qute, which it directly replaces………….
